Moment of ovulation is captured on film

Remarkable pictures that show an egg being released from a woman’s ovary could offer new insights into the process of ovulation. The images were captured by Jacques Donnez, of the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, who told New Scientist magazine: “The release of the oocyte [egg] from the ovary is a crucial event in human reproduction.” Before the egg is released, the follicle that holds it is broken down, creating a red-coloured protrusion. The egg emerges, surrounded by support cells, before being released into the Fallopian tube.
